Markel, a prominent US-based specialty insurer, has announced the launch of professional indemnity (PI) insurance products specifically designed for the Australian market.
This strategic move comes in response to a notable reduction in PI insurance capacity over recent years, leaving many professionals seeking reliable coverage options.

Following the establishment of offices in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane in September 2023, Markel has assembled an experienced underwriting and claims team to support its expansion. The newly introduced PI products feature localised policy wordings tailored to six key professional areas: accounting, construction, design and construct, insurance, media, and miscellaneous sectors.

Kym Beazleigh, Head of Professional and Financial Risks Australia at Markel, highlighted the challenges faced by the Australian PI market over the past five years, including significant pricing and coverage adjustments affecting various sectors such as construction, engineering, energy, and professional services. Beazleigh stated that Markel aims to build a diversified and sustainable portfolio across a variety of professions, leveraging the company's global expertise to support complex and evolving sectors.

One area of particular focus for Markel is the renewable energy sector, which has historically been underserved in the Australian insurance market. By drawing on its global experience, Markel intends to address the unique risks associated with renewable energy projects, including grid connection issues, weather-related risks, and emerging technologies. This initiative aligns with Australia's ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and transition towards sustainable energy sources.

Markel's entry into the Australian PI insurance market is expected to provide much-needed capacity and tailored solutions for professionals across various industries. The company's commitment to localised products and empowered underwriting reflects a strategic approach to meeting the specific needs of Australian businesses.

For professionals seeking PI insurance, Markel's offerings present an opportunity to secure coverage that aligns with their industry's unique risks and requirements. As the market continues to evolve, the introduction of such specialised products is a positive development for Australian professionals navigating the complexities of PI insurance.
