South Australian trade businesses should keep an eye on a quiet but important workers’ compensation development.
ReturnToWorkSA has begun a procurement process for claims management services, with the current long-running arrangements involving EML and Gallagher Bassett due to end before new services commence from 1 July 2027.

For many tradies, workers’ compensation is treated as a compliance item that sits in the background until someone is injured. But claims management can have a very real day-to-day impact on employers, injured workers and site operations. The claims agent is often involved in communication, recovery planning, return-to-work coordination and the administration that follows an injury. A change in provider arrangements may not alter the legal obligation to hold workers’ compensation cover, but it could affect the processes employers deal with when a claim occurs.

This matters for builders, electricians, plumbers, landscapers, concreters and other trade businesses that employ staff in South Australia. A workplace injury can quickly disrupt job scheduling, subcontractor coordination and cash flow. Even a relatively straightforward claim can create pressure if paperwork is incomplete, duties are unclear or the business has not updated wage and worker information.

The timing also gives employers a useful window to review their own systems before the new claims arrangements begin. Practical steps include checking that employee classifications are accurate, wages are declared correctly, incident reporting procedures are understood on site, and suitable duties are documented where possible. Supervisors and leading hands should also know what to do immediately after an injury, because early action can help reduce confusion and support a smoother return-to-work process.

Workers’ compensation is only one part of a broader risk picture for trade businesses. It does not replace public liability insurance, tool cover, commercial vehicle insurance or personal income protection arrangements for owners. Sole traders and working directors should be especially careful about assuming they are protected in the same way as employees. If an injury or illness stops the owner from working, the financial impact can be immediate.

With insurance costs, compliance pressure and labour availability all under scrutiny, now is a sensible time to revisit business cover settings rather than waiting for renewal notices or a claim event. Trade business owners may benefit from professional assistance when comparing statutory obligations with optional covers, especially where they operate across state borders or use a mix of employees and subcontractors.

The key takeaway is simple: the ReturnToWorkSA procurement process is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to prepare. Good records, clear safety procedures and well-matched insurance arrangements can make a major difference when an injury interrupts the worksite.

Fresh SME insurance reporting has put underinsurance back in the spotlight, with new national survey data indicating that many Australian small businesses are still not reviewing their cover as carefully as their risks are changing.
